The first guiding principle of Iowa’s Framework and Process to Support Schools is the driving force for the academic and well-being success of each and every student. What does this belief mean to us as educators, and why is it important? In order to meet the needs of all learners, it’s necessary to create inclusive and equitable systems that ensure that all students have equal opportunities to learn at high levels.

It’s important to make sure students and educators get the support they need academically, behaviorally, and socially/emotionally in order to succeed. To do this, educators have to challenge beliefs, skills, and systems so the work is learner-driven and evidence-informed. All of that together, in a nutshell, is what forms a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
